Science Day at HLPF 2024

Against a troubling geopolitical backdrop, the annual session of the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development will convene under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises" while 38 countries will present SDG progress reports.
46th Meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol
How will parties fund new atmospheric monitoring sites? How is the Protocol managing implementation challenges? Should it regulate new substances, which may or may not have ozone-depleting potential? How will parties address trade in obsolete equipment? Delegates began to answer these questions and more.
14th Meeting of the Open-ended Working Group of the Basel Convention
To prepare for the next meeting of the Conference of the Parties, delegates grappled with challenges in regulating the movement of transboundary waste. This requires a common understanding of what counts as waste as definitions continue to change as technology advances.
Organizational Meeting of the Preparatory Commission for the Entry Into Force of the BBNJ Agreement and the Convening of the 1st Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Agreement
Discussions over the work programme took up most of the three-day meeting, with a focus on governance and financial issues to be addressed by the Conference of the Parties once the Agreement enters into force. The next meeting is expected to be in April 2025.
3rd Meeting of the Ad Hoc Open-ended Working Group on a Science-Policy Panel to Contribute Further to the Sound Management of Chemicals and Waste and to Prevent Pollution
Delegates were expected to make significant progress in establishing the scientific foundations for better management of chemicals and waste. However, they were unable to reach consensus on the “foundational document” outlining the basic structure of the science-policy panel.
67th Meeting of the GEF Council
Council concluded deliberations on a heavy agenda, confirming key decisions taken throughout the four days of meetings including the first ever work program for the newly established GBFF, and the largest ever LDCF work program.
GEF Consultation with Civil Society - Conversation on GEF initiatives and approaches to Civil Society
Moderated by the GEF Secretariat and GEF CSO Network, civil society organizations explored approaches contributing to pathways toward greater civil society engagement in GEF processes. In closing, Claude Gascon, GEF, underscored that civil society organizations and local actions are "the needed bottom-up approach to restore the environment."
High-Level Event on Ocean Action: Immersed in Change
To maintain momentum in the year leading up to the Third UN Ocean Conference in France in June 2025, discussions in eight panel sessions, a high-level dialogue, and side events shared knowledge, information, initiatives and innovations to support evidence-based ocean action.
